Hello Europe project has been founded by 3 portuguese friends who want to find the best buskers in Europe through a 100 days road trip. We’ve been really interested in the project and we wanted to learn more about it’s creation. Guilherme Duarte, one of the founder gently accepted to answer few questions about Hello Europe project.
If you don’t know yet the aim of the project we invite you to read our previous post about Hello Europe project and remind you that you can contribute by a donation here in order to help those friends to realize their project.
Interview of Guilherme Duarte, Founder of Hello Europe
Since how long have you been thinking about this project ?
The project was born in my mind in August 2012, in a very embryonic form. I knew I wanted to do something different which merged all my interests. Then with a couple of talks with João, the name Hello Europe was born and all the concept of searching for buskers and giving people the opportunity to vote for the best ones was forged. Then it was hands on work, creating all we needed to reveal our project to the public. All the design, videos, crowdfunding campaign, getting celebrity endorsement and all the things we needed to get this up and running.
Then the 24th January of 2013 the project was live. We started by trying to get media coverage in Portugal, on what we have succeeded and try to get the most followers we could and create buzz around the project. And now it’s time for the crowdfunding campaign and see what happens.
What’s gonna be the role of each person during your journey ?
We’ll probably share the same roles. We are all going to film, edit and manage all the social media platforms. Maybe I’ll focus on writing and video editing, João on photo editing and Ivo on cooking the dinner.
Why focusing in Europe only ?
For now it’s only Europe. For now… Well it has to do mainly with costs and proof of concept. If we aimed already for Hello World, the costs would be very high and probably we wouldn’t be able to achieve it. For now, we are going to focus only in Europe, and if people follow our adventure and we get the feedback we are aiming for, maybe later we can extend it to other countries/continents.
Have you ever been busking ?
No. I personally don’t have any artistic skill, at least that I know of. Ivo and João know how to play the guitar and Ivo can sing really well but they never did it as well. We don’t have the guts for it, and I think that is another reason why we respect so much street performers and want to promote their art.
How would you convince people to donate in order to realize this project ?
I think the best way to convince them is to ask if they ever seen a street performer that made them stop and appreciate the art. If they ever seen a street performer video on the internet and wished they would have seen it live so they could donate some money. If the answer is yes, you should definitely contribute to our crowdfunding campaign. Not only your money will be used so we can have the means to search and promote the best buskers, as 30% will go directly to the artists prizes and 10% to a non-profit organization called “Youth Mill” which has an amazing mission on one of the toughest neighborhoods in Portugal.
Do you have a message you would like to adress to people ?
The main message is to state once again our mission. Some people may think our main mission is only to travel and party, but it’s not, and we are confident that who takes time to know our project will the see amount of work we’ve put into it and that our main goal is really to show that the street is an amazing stage where everyone can express themselves. We want to promote these artists that so many times we pass by without noticing that they are the ones who give sound, color and life to our cities. In a continent with vast culture, we want to show that street art doesn’t know borders, that it is in fact an Universal language that deserves all our respect and must be seen, shared and felt.
We want to thanks again Guiherme for his time and we wish good luck to Hello Europe.
